Mapped the ocean floor. Proved continental drift.

"Nothing is so important as an open mind."

Biography

Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who revolutionized our understanding of Earth's geology by mapping the ocean floor and providing crucial evidence for the theory of continental drift. Working with Bruce Heezen, she discovered the MidOcean Ridge system, fundamentally transforming plate tectonics from speculation to established science. Her meticulous data visualization transformed raw sonar readings into elegant maps that revealed the dynamic nature of our planet.

Key Facts

  • Created the first comprehensive maps of the Atlantic Ocean floor, revealing the underwater mountain range that supports plate tectonics theory
  • Discovered the rift valley running down the center of the Mid-Ocean Ridge, providing key evidence that continental plates are moving
  • Was initially denied research vessel access because she was a woman, forcing her to work with data analysis instead—ultimately her greatest contribution
  • Her 1977 world ocean floor map is considered one of the most important scientific illustrations of the 20th century
  • Won the National Women's Hall of Fame induction in 2002 for transforming geology and proving that continents drift across the ocean floor

She mapped the ocean floor and proved continents actually move.
