Judge who restored Israel's covenant with the divine
"The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went to war against the king of Aram Naharaim and prevailed."
Biography
Othniel was Israel's first judge and a military deliverer who liberated the Israelites from Cushanrishathaim's oppression through divine inspiration. His eightyear judgeship established the archetypal pattern of Israel's cyclical relationship with God—apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. He exemplified the theology that faithfulness to covenant brings peace while unfaithfulness brings servitude.
