Invented Hydyne rocket fuel. America's first satellite wouldn't have launched without her.

"I didn't know what I didn't know. If I had known how much I didn't know, I probably wouldn't have tried."

Biography

Mary Sherman Morgan was a selftaught chemist whose development of Hydyne rocket fuel proved critical to America's space race success. Working at North American Aviation during the 1950s, she formulated the highenergy propellant that powered the JupiterC rocket, enabling Explorer 1 to become the first American satellite in 1958. Her groundbreaking work in chemistry remained largely unrecognized until late in her life, when she finally received public acknowledgment for her pivotal contribution to American spaceflight.

Key Facts

  • Developed Hydyne, a nitrogen tetroxide and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine mixture, achieving 6% higher specific impulse than competing fuels
  • Her fuel formulation was essential for the Jupiter-C rocket that launched Explorer 1, beating the Soviet Sputnik in American orbit
  • Worked at North American Aviation during the height of the Cold War space race with limited recognition for decades
  • Did not receive public credit for her contributions until a 1997 article and later autobiography brought her work to light
  • Overcame significant gender discrimination in aerospace engineering to establish herself as an expert chemist in a male-dominated field

She invented rocket fuel that put America in space. History forgot her name.
