The way that can be spoken is not the eternal way.

"When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you."

Biography

Laozi was an ancient Chinese philosopher whose foundational text, the Daodejing, became one of the most influential works in Eastern philosophy. His teachings on the Dao—the fundamental nature of reality—revolutionized metaphysical thought and spawned Daoism as a major religious and philosophical movement. His paradoxical insights on nonaction, simplicity, and natural harmony continue to shape millions of practitioners across Asia and increasingly the Western world.

Key Facts

  • The Daodejing, attributed to Laozi, consists of 5,000 characters of poetic wisdom traditionally divided into 81 chapters
  • Laozi is venerated as a deity in religious Daoism, considered one of the Three Pure Ones in the Daoist pantheon
  • Legend claims Laozi lived over 160 years; modern scholars debate whether he was a historical figure or composite of multiple teachers
  • He reportedly served as an archivist or record-keeper at the royal court during China's Spring and Autumn Period
  • The concept of wu wei (non-action or effortless action) from his teachings became central to both Daoist and later Zen Buddhist philosophy
