Biography
Mary Sherman Morgan was a selftaught chemist whose development of Hydyne rocket fuel proved critical to America's space race success. Working at North American Aviation during the 1950s, she formulated the highenergy propellant that powered the JupiterC rocket, enabling Explorer 1 to become the first American satellite in 1958. Her groundbreaking work in chemistry remained largely unrecognized until late in her life, when she finally received public acknowledgment for her pivotal contribution to American spaceflight.
