Boolean logic runs every computer on earth.

"It is not of the science of Logic, as that science is commonly understood, that I propose to treat."

Biography

George Boole was an English mathematician and logician who invented Boolean algebra, a system of logic using binary values that became the mathematical foundation of digital computing. His 1854 work 'An Investigation of the Laws of Thought' revolutionized mathematics by proving logic could be treated algebraically. Though he died at only 49, his framework is literally embedded in every computer, smartphone, and digital device on Earth.

Key Facts

  • Boole was largely self-taught and rose from humble beginnings as a shoemaker's son to become a university professor
  • His algebraic system uses only 0 and 1, true and false, on and off—the exact binary language computers still use today
  • He published his groundbreaking work at age 39, relatively late in life but with profound immediate influence
  • Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) are named directly after him and are fundamental to all search engines and programming
  • He was also a poet and philosopher who believed mathematics could illuminate the nature of human thought itself

One man turned logic into ones and zeros. Now his algebra runs the world.
