Nobody knew how to build the Florence dome. He figured it out.

"The dome will be constructed not by enslaving armies of workers, but by the ingenious application of art and science."

Biography

Filippo Brunelleschi was a Florentine architect and engineer who solved one of the Renaissance's greatest challenges: constructing the dome of Florence Cathedral without internal supports. His innovative use of doubleshell architecture, advanced mathematics, and custom machinery revolutionized construction techniques and established him as the father of modern architecture.

Key Facts

  • He invented the double-dome structure, using two shells to distribute weight and eliminate the need for wooden scaffolding
  • Brunelleschi was also a pioneering mathematician who developed linear perspective, fundamentally changing how artists approached composition
  • He created innovative construction machines, including a hoisting apparatus powered by oxen, to build at unprecedented heights
  • The Florence Cathedral dome remained the largest in the world for over 600 years and still stands without internal supports
  • He lost a major commission to rival Lorenzo Ghiberti in 1401, channeling this rejection into obsessive study of engineering and mathematics

He built an impossible dome. With no backup plan.
